In Hard Times, the Teacher, Mr. Gradgrind, says that he loves facts and he must teach the students nothing but facts. He shows that he completely believes in this when he questions “girl number 20” about what a horse is. She isn’t able to describe a horse in facts and calls on Bitzer to describe a horse and he succeeds in doing it. He describes the horse in FACTS. He says “Quadruped. Graminivorous. Forty teeth, namely twenty-four grinders, four eye-teeth, and twelve incisive. Sheds coats in the spring; in marshy countries, sheds hoofs too. Hoofs hard, but requiring to be much sod with iron.” The teacher agrees with him because every word he says about the horse is a fact, and the teacher loves facts.
