Louisa loves her brother

In chapter 3 of book the second, after Tom and Harthouse have dinner, they go back to Harthouse's apartment where he rewards Tom with Wine and Cigarettes. He then persuades Tom to reveal the story about Louisa's marriage; Tom then tells Harthouse that she supposedly only married Bounderby for his money. Louisa wanted Bounderby's money in order to help Tom with money problems he faces. Do you think what Louisa did was acceptible during that time period, or was it considered "gold digging" like we do in today's society?

  1. I honestly think that Louisa's choice in marring Bounderby was only because of her consideration towards her brother Tom. This reveals how much love and care she has for him. She's obviously trying her best to cope with such an uncomfortable marriage, just to satisfy Tom's needs. It also shows how self-sacrrificing she can be. In a situation like this, it can really relate to the way today's society is. For example; When Louisa puts her families satisfactions before her own, it was done for a purpose. That purpose was for Tom to have a well and healthy life-style. But, I do strongly believe that Louisa's choice could have been an "acceptable"one but also a "gold-digging" one.

  2. Louisa was sacrificing her needs and pleasure to help her brother with his troubles. She married Bounderby to support her brother and his money issues. In that time and age this act probably would be viewed as an appalling and wicked act of greed, but in today’s society there are many women that manipulate and marry wealthier men. Some of these women do this out of selfishness and greed, but in Louisa’s case she was assisting a family member whom she cares for and loves. I believe that Louisa was being a good sibling by trying to help Tom with his problems, but by marrying Bounderby she helps one person and hurts another. Out of the kindness of her heart, there also came hurt. In other words, Louisa had a positive and negative affect with her actions; Tom solved his money problems and Bounderby was cheated out of love and money. I agree with Angelica when she states that “Louisa’s choice could have been an ‘acceptable’ one but also a ‘gold-digging’ one.” She was helping her brother and playing her husband.
