Out for Himself.
It seems to me that Mr. Gradgrind wishes to carry on his legacy of facts through his children, and he's starting them off young. Sweet, it may seem, that a father is wanting his children to walk in his footsteps and be a model of facts, just like himself. But, isn't it a bit.. cruel? For "no little Gradgrind had ever learnt the silly jingle, Twinkle, twinkle, little star; how I wonder what you are!", and how they probably do wonder, but may never know. Does wanting his children to be this way seem realistic? Do you think it's selfish of him?

I do agree that Gradgrind is depriving his children's childhoods which is not fair for them. I also believe that Gradgrind is selfish because it seems as if he is doing this because he wants his kids to have the same as him. Also, since Gradgrind never had a 'real' childhood and he didn't want to feel like the only one that didn't live out his childhood.
ReplyDeleteIn a sense I believe Gradgrind is ruining his children's childhoods, because he feels as if he wasn't able to fulfill his childhood the way he wanted it, then why should his children be able to? So this also goes along with Gradgrind being selfish. I also agree with what (HenrySNSD) said, that Gradgrind doesn't want to be the only one who wasn't competent to live up to his childhood.
