Dickens is sometimes funny, often sarcastic, in his naming of characters. Which names do you think mean more than just a name, and what do you think they mean?
When naming his character, something I noticed is that Dickens names his characters based on what their personality is. For example, Mr. Thomas Gradgrind is a person who tries to forces his beliefs on other people making them go by solid facts and nothing changes. Everything, to Mr. Gradgrind, has to be in order and follow logical conclusions and facts. Hence the name Mr. Gradgrind because he "grinds" his beliefs into other people's minds.
With the character Sissy Jupe- whose real name is Cecilia- the nickname "Sissy" fits her because she seems fragile and "sissy". She's a character who likes flowers and fancies to other pretty, fragile things she's fond of. Sissy is easily intimidated by dominance. Also, the name "Jupe" translates to "skirt" in French. Skirts are what is expected to be worn by girls. So it seems that Dickens named Sissy Jupe to fit her personality it the story.
I agree with Aika because I believe when Dickens names the characters in the book he does it based upon their personalities. For example, when he Names Sissy Jupe, he gives her a Nick name instead of calling her by her real name which is Cecilia. He points out that it’s a nick name when and meant to describe her personality when the teacher asks for her name and he tells her that her name is Cecilia, not Sissy. I find it interesting that Jupe means skirt in French, it really clarifies that she is a girly girl and confirms my theory about how Dickens names his characters.
